What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a surgery to replace lost volume in the breast. It should not be confused with a breast lift surgery. Most breast augmentation patients are women who either never had much breast tissue to begin with and would like to fit clothing better or to feel more feminine, or women who have lost volume due to a pregnancy or weight loss. Breast augmentation surgery should not change the basic shape of the breast, just make it fuller.
How is breast augmentation surgery performed?
Breast implants can be placed through one of four incision sites: the belly button, the crease under the breast, under the areola, or in the armpit. There are pros and cons with each incision site and these should be discussed with the plastic surgeon performing the surgery. Basically, it comes down to where the patient wants their visible scar to be located. Implants can also be placed above or below the chest muscle using any of these incision sites. Again, there are pros and cons to each location and this should also be discussed with the operating doctor.
How can I find a qualified board certified plastic surgeon?
Many doctors perform cosmetic surgery, however, only surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) are legitimate plastic surgeons. The ABPS is the only board recognized by the American Medical Association for the training and certification of plastic surgeons. Doctors certified by this board may be found through the website of the ABPS or the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. If a "plastic surgeon" is selected through advertisements or the yellow pages, it is important to check his credentials. It is also a good idea to ask him about his experience with the procedure you are interested in doing. How many cases has he done? Can you see before/after pictures? Can you speak with a former patient? Above all, you must feel comfortable with the plastic surgeon you have selected. Remember, he is the one with whom you are entrusting your results!
