1. How soon after breast augmentation surgery can I raise my arms up over my head?
You will be able to raise your arms over your head anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks after breast augmentation. This depends on size of implants, patient pain tolerance, and placement of implants. A breast augmentation operation is an operation that affects the muscles of both arms. It is possible to place the implants on top of the muscle or underneath the muscle. Most implants today are placed underneath the muscle. This means that the muscle must stretch over the implant. If a large implant is stretched over a tight muscle, then more time is necessary for adjustment
2. Does having implants mean limits to any activities?
Having implants in place will not limit normal daily activities. Sudden stresses to the chest such as Bungie Jumping may increase the risk of rupture. Mammograms are done by squeezing the breast tissue, and you should always tell the mammographer that you have implants so that the breast will be moved away from the implant for the study.
3. Is there really such a thing as the "postoperative Blues"?
It is not uncommon to have a ‘down day’ a week or so after surgery. This may be because you’re tired as you haven’t had good sleep for a few days, or because you feel stressed over the whole situation. It is normal and temporary.
4. What is a "Breast Compression Clamp" and what is it for?
A "breast compression clamp" is a small plastic device with two well-padded plastic arms hinged together at one end. It is intended to squeeze the breast implant, thereby keeping the implant cavity large and preventing the scar around the implant from shrinking. It is not commonly used by Plastic Surgeons.
5. After augmentation, will my own breast tissue change size?
After augmentation, your own breast tissue will not change because of the implant. There are many normal reasons that breast volume can and will continue to change during your life, primarily due to hormonal changes and weight changes. The breast tissue will be stretched out over the implant and may appear thinner.
6. After augmentation with Silicone gel implants, how often does the FDA advise an M.R.I. to check for failure?
The current recommendation for MRI after silicone gel implants is to have the first MRI 3 years after implantation and every 2 years after that to look for signs of leak or rupture.
7. Is it true that re-operation can be done though the navel?
Initial operation and re-operation are not recommended to be done through the navel. This has been described, but is not advised by the implant manufacturers, and there are no clinical studies to determine if this is a safe practice. The implant warranty will be voided if implants are inserted through this technique.
