An Interview With Dr. Beckenstein, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Birmingham

How is breast augmentation surgery performed?

There are several techniques for augmentation depending on the nature of the breast tissue and skin. Implants can be placed above (subglandular), below (submuscular) or, in some cases, in a dual plane between the muscle and breast tissue. An incision is made, in most cases. I prefer a small incision in the fold of the breast (inframammary incision) and the pocket is created to accommodate the implant we chose prior to surgery. After it is placed and I am pleased with the appearance, the incisions are closed, wounds dressed, and a bra is applied.

Who is a good candidate for breast augmentation?

HEALTHY Women with small breasts, who wish to be larger and fuller, are good candidates for augmentation. Those who have involutional changes following breast feeding, loss of upper fullness, sagging and strecth marks might be reasonable candidates if there is a minimal to moderate degree of Ptosis (sagging). This, of course, would be detrmined with a consultation with a real, board certified plastic surgeon

How can I find a qualified board certified plastic surgeon?

There are several sources to find a REAL board certified plastic surgeon. There are many surgoens now saying they are plastic or cosmetic surgeons, whereas they do not have the true certification of a plastic surgeon. Only members of THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF PLASTIC SURGEONS (ASPS) WWW.PLASTICSURGERY.ORG or THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR AESTHETIC PLASTIC SURGEERY (ASAPS) WWW.SURGERY.ORG are certified by the AMERICAN BOARD OF PLASTIC SURGERY (ABPS) WWW.ABPLSURG.ORG. All other boards are not sanctioned by the true governing body of medical specialities. Surgeons who are members of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery or the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery may not be truly certified to perform these procedures even if they state they are board certified. YOU MUST RESEARCH YOUR SURGEON TO MAKE SURE HE/SHE IS TRULY A BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON. VISIT THE ASPS or ASAPS websites to assure your surgeon is "real."
