An Interview With Dr. Prada, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Chesterfield

What is breast augmentation?

A breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure where an implant is placed to augment the size of the breasts. There are two primary implants used today, silicone and saline. The implant can be placed under the muscle, subpectoral or under the breast tissue, subglandular. In almost all my patients, the implant is placed under the muscle to reduce the risk of capsular contracture, improve mammography viewing and prevent rippling. In most cases the implants are placed through in incision under the breast, around the nipple, or in the armpit.

How can I find a qualified board certified plastic surgeon?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons website will list most of the Board Certified Plastic Surgeons.

What are the possible immediate post-operative effects of breast augmentation surgery?

Some of the immediate post operative risks include bleeding, infection, asymmetry, decreased nipple sensation and rupture of the implant.

What are the possible longer-term, local effects in breast augmentation surgery?

Possible long term risks include capsular contracture, rupture of the implant, malpositioned implant, rippling or palpability of the implant and hypertrophic scar formation.

How should one prepare for breast augmentation surgery?

Most importantly, find a surgeon who is board certified in Plastic Surgery. The patient should try to educate themselves on the implants available and understand that these implants are not permanent and will need to be replaced at some point in the future.

How is breast augmentation surgery performed?

Prior to the surgery we have the patient come into our office for a preop visit. It is here that we have the patient "size " and choose the implant best for them. We find this tremendously helpful in proper implant selection.I prefer to place the implants through either an inframammary incision ( under the breast) or periareolar ( around the nipple). I find it easier to release the pectoralis muscle which covers the implant. Improper release of the muscle can lead to high appearing implants. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia in a surgery center. It generally takes less than an hour to perform. A pain pump filled with a local anesthetic is placed at the time of surgery into the breast pocket to reduce discomfort.
