What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to increase the size and shape of your breasts. A saline or silicone implant is placed under the breast tissue to give the desired size and look the patient wants.
What are the possible longer-term, local effects in breast augmentation surgery?
Most women who have breast augmentation performed are very satisfied with their results. Some long term complications can be seen and are important to be aware of. The natural response of everyone's body is to make a capsule around the breast implant. The capsule can contract and become hard (capsular contracture) resulting in an un-natural shape and feel. If this occurs, the capsule may need to be removed. There is also a risk of implant rupture and the need to replace the implant if this would occur. These are a few of the more common complications that can occur and you should discuss these with your plastic surgeon prior to your operation.
What are the possible immediate post-operative effects of breast augmentation surgery?
The results of the operation are immediate. You will be swollen and sore for several days and you will be limited in your physical activity for several weeks. Most breast augmentations are done as an outpatient and you are able to go home the same day as your operation.
How is breast augmentation surgery performed?
The actual operation can be quite varied depending on your body type and size of implant you choose. The implant can be placed through an incision at the base of the breast (Infra-mammary fold), around the areola, or in the axilla. Once the skin incision has been made the breast implant can be placed underneath the breast tissue (sub-glandular) or below the pectoralis muscle (sub-pectoral). The exact placement of your implant should be customized to your body type and the look that you would like to achieve.
How should one prepare for breast augmentation surgery?
It is important to spend time talking with your surgeon to completely understand the operation and the potential risks that can be involved. Most women have been thinking about breast augmentation for 2-3 years prior to seeing a physician about having the operation performed. They have spent time on the internet and are pretty well informed. From a physical standpoint, it is ideal to be at or near your desired weight. This will allow you to reach the size and shape that you would like.
