An Interview With Dr. Winfield Hartley, M.D., F.A.C.S. , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon For Moms In Denver

1. How long are the incisions used for breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a procedure that has been around for approximately 45 years and is designed to enhance the size and shape of a woman' s breast. It can be performed through incisions at the base of the breast, in the crease or through incisions around the nipple or through an incision in the high armpit crease. The incisions are approximately 3cm in length for saline augmentation and approximately 4 to 5cm in length for silicone gel augmentation.

2. How can I "care" for incision after the surgery, so that it heals as nicely as possible?

All incisions typically heal very well with minimal after care, but do require approximately a year to fully mature. Scar management includes sunscreen when applicable, massaging the scar tissue as it heals and keeping the incision well moisturized. Silicone scar strips can also be used as an adjunct to promote better scarring.

3. Can I get silicone implants for my first breast augmentation?

Silicone and saline implants are both available now for primary breast augmentation.

4. Can silicone gel move outside the pocket, orscarcapsule?

The newest silicone gel devices are cohesive gel which has also been described as a gummy bear implant and what that means is the silicone inside of the implant behaves like Jell-O than jelly and should the shell develop a leak or a hole, the silicone gel on the inside of the implant cannot leak into the tissues.

5. Will I get stretch marks when I have my breast augmentation? Can I prevent them?

Breast augmentations generally do not develop any type of stretch marks on the breasts themselves. However, if stretch marks are visible from previous pubertal development or breastfeeding, they will still be present after surgery.

6. Will I have to massage my implants (smooth and textured)?

I recommend implant massage for all my patients to maintain soft and supple breasts after the procedure and to maintain a natural look and feel to the breast.

7. Will smoking affect my recovery?

Smoking in the pre operative or post operative period can be very detrimental to healing as it inhibits the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the healing breasts. This can delay recovery and result in poor scarring and an increased risk of infection.
