An Interview With Dr.Barry L. Eppley, MD, DMD , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon For Moms In Fishers

1. Can a woman breast-feed after breast augmentation?

Yes. The placing of a breast implant does not disrupt the milk-producing glands and ducts underneath the nipple.

2. Is it true that there is usually no loss of sense of touch of the nipples?

In most cases, this is true. Breast augmentation rarely causes any loss of nipple sensation. While this is a known surgical risk and a patient must be willing to accept it, it is very uncommon.

3. Can implants achieve some lifting of sagging breasts?

In minor amounts of sagging, an implant may create a little bit of a lift. But, in general, a breast that significantly sags requires some form of a breast lift.

4. What about getting insurance to pay for the breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure and is never covered by medical insurance.

5. Will my breast implants feel like natural breasts?

In most cases, yes. While many people feel they can tell the difference, most cannot.

6. What is the difference between breast implants placed under the pectoralis muscle and implants placed over it?

While breast implants can be placed both above and below the chest muscle, most plastic surgeons prefer to position the implants underneath the muscle. The risk of hardening of the breasts over one' s lifetime is decreased with this approach.

7. Will smoking affect my recovery?

Smoking, in general, is not beneficial for the body to heal after surgery and for undergoing anesthesia. It does increase the risk of infection and potential healing issues around a new breast implant.
