An Interview With Dr. Brueck, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Fort Myers

What is breast augmentation?

This is an operation done to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breasts.

Who is a good candidate for breast augmentation?

The ideal candidate for a breast “aug” is a woman who has had a couple of children and may be a B-C cup but has lost volume due to nursing and pregnancy. She is ideal. The least favorable is a woman who is skinny, no breast tissue, weighs very little and wants to be a D cup.

How should one prepare for breast augmentation surgery?

I recommend a pre-aug mammogram, if one has not been done. Avoid any medications that may increase the risk of bleeding or bruising such as aspirin, fish oil, etc.

How is breast augmentation surgery performed?

This operation is done as an out-patient under sedation so the patient feels no pain. The patient then goes to the recovery room for an hour or so and then home.

How can I find a qualified board certified plastic surgeon?

Word of mouth is important. I have found that many women who have had a breast aug will show and/or share their experiences with their friends or prospective patients. Experience matters when choosing a board certified plastic surgeon. See their work as well.

What are the possible immediate post-operative effects of breast augmentation surgery?

There will be some discomfort post-op. I have my patients wear a sports bra post-op and usually will have them put an ice bag between their breasts. This helps with pain and swelling. Usually the first 4 days are princess days, limited activity. Real exercise can start in about 4 weeks.

What type of anesthetic is used for breast augmentation surgery?

We use IV sedation.

What risks are associated with breast augmentation?

There are the usual risks with any operation, ie. bruising, swelling, infection, bleeding, asymmetry, loss of nipple sensation. Also they will not last forever and will need to be replaced in time. The other risk is the encapsulation or firmness.

What are the possible longer-term, local effects in breast augmentation surgery?

The most common long term effect that happens to some patients is hardness or encapsulation. Everyone will get a capsule so I have my patients massage their breast daily, morning and night to help keep the breast soft and non tender. Like anything else at some point in time they will need to be replaced.
