An Interview With Dr. Sean Lille MD , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon For Moms In Phoenix

1. What prevents bacteria from getting into implants?

Bacteria colonization of implants is reduced by performing the surgery in accredited facilities that use sterile techniques. The surgeon utilizes certain techniques to help reduce contamination even further by treating the surrounding skin and implant prior to placement in the body. In addition, I suggest using antibiotics before and for a period after the procedure.

2. What about mammograms after breast augmentation?

Mamograms should be performed if the patient has a significant family history of breast cancer or is 40 years or older with no prior history of a mamogram. If the patient has close family members with breast cancer, then a mamogram take just before the surgery and again after 6 months following the surgery to help determine baseline findings is very helpful.

4. What are the specifications for the different implants?

Implants come in various sizes and shapes. I use the width of the patient s breast to help determine the diameter of the implant. I like to use implants that at least match the diameter of the patient s breast or up to 1 cm beyond to help maximize cleavage. I prefer smooth implants over textured because I believe textured implants rupture more easily and show more ripples on the skin surface. Bases upon the mathematical range of the breast diameter, I use implants that are placed on their breast with a specialized bra to help them decide what is best for them.

5. Can implants cause breast cancer?

Implants do not cause breast cancer, in fact, in some studies, the presence of implants have shown an association with a decrease in breast cancer. I believe this is related to the implant pushing out the tissue so any irregularity can be felt more easily.
