Breast augmentation is enlargement of the breasts with saline or silicone implants.

How should one prepare for breast augmentation surgery?


The best way to prepare for surgery is to be in good health, take a multivitamin and avoid all aspirin, anti-inflammatories (like advil or motrin) and herbal supplements which may thin the blood or interact with anesthesia.

How is breast augmentation surgery performed?


Breast augmentation is performed by making an incision below the breast or around the areola and inserting the implant usually below the pectoral muscle.

A general anesthetic is used . The procedure typically takes 1-1.5 hours and is outpatient.

What risks are associated with breast augmentation?

Risks are involved with any surgical procedure. They include but are not limited to bleeding, infection, sensation changes, capsular contracture, asymmetry, unsatisfactory scarring, and implant leakage. You will most likely have additional surgeries related to the breasts in your lifetime. Fortunately serious risks are very rare. The recovery time varies, but typically you should take it easy for 1-2 weeks and not drive for one week. Strenuous activity and exercise should be avoided for 5-6 weeks.
