1. What is the minimum age you have to be to have your breast augmented?
Technically, there is none; especially in reference to reconstruction augmentation, Poland’s syndrome being an example. For cosmetic purposes, we would like the patient older than 18yrs for saline implants and 22yrs for silicone implants.
2. Can I sleep on my stomach after surgery? Will this be comfortable?
Yes, though anecdotally, it seems that women with silicone implants are more comfortable sleeping on their stomach than women with saline implants. Additionally, the size of the implant also comes into play with overly large saline implants being the least comfortable.
3. How long will it take my implants to settle into place?
Everyone is different, some individuals will have their implants settle within a few weeks, while others may take up to 18 months.
4. Should I quit smoking before my breast implant surgery? Can I use a nicotine patch or gum?
Yes; patches or gum only give a slight improvement or decrease in complication risk.
5. Will my implants feel like natural breast?
Yes, more so with silicone than saline, and again the size of the implant does have an effect with overly large saline implants feeling the least natural.
6. When should I stop taking aspirin or Vitamin E before surgery? What about drinking alcohol?
A minimum of 2 weeks and preferably 30 days in reference to the aspirin or Vit. E, and at least 24 hours for alcohol.
7. If one of my implants deflates, will I know it? Will I become flat immediately?
If your implants are saline; it will go flat over the course of time. Deflation can take several weeks if the leak is small enough. Silicone implants on the other hand will not go flat and consequently, you may not know if the implant has failed without doing an imaging study.
