An Interview With Dr. Barnett, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Tampa

How should one prepare for breast augmentation surgery?

One should prepare for augmentation surgery by stopping smoking (although, I hope if you are a mom you do not do such a thing!) and avoiding blood thinners such as aspirin and fish oil. Also, check with your doctor to make sure that any medications you are on do not cause interaction with your anesthesia. Most surgery is done under anesthesia in an outpatient surgery facility. The nurses at the facility will go over in much detail with you when to show up and how to dress, but in general it is best to wear something which is easy to get in and out of, like a button down shirt because your arms may be sore after the surgery and you don't want to raise them too high. Also avoid wearing white, so that any surgical soap or a blood spot does not ruin your clothes. Don't wear a lot of make-up to the surgery center as you don't need to impress anyone there and it can smudge or actually interfere with your anesthesiologist's ability to assess your skin color. Believe it or not, that is important to them during surgery! Also don't wear jewelry because the nurses will make you take it off or the electric current of the cautery can cause a burn where the jewelry touches the skin. If you absolutely will not remove your wedding band, the nurses will tape it to lessen that risk. Remember that the effects of general anesthesia or the sedatives used will be in your system for at least 24 hours, so you must have someone available to drive you to and from the surgery facility and stay with you the first night to assist you if you need help. If you require pain medications for several days afterwards, and not everyone needs them so long, then you will need someone to take you to appointments or assist with the kids as your surgeon will not want you to do any lifting for at least a week afterwards. Remember to bring kitchen items needed for cooking from the high shelves to lower as you will not be allowed to reach too high for awhile, or better yet, have your meals and snacks pre-cooked. I tell my desk-job patients to take a week off work but not everyone needs so long. Most of my office girls who have had this surgery want to return to work in half the time, but just the anesthetic alone can make some people feel a little  "poopy." I generally will let my patients lift their kids (heavier than 15 lbs) after a week unless they have a real "squirmer " who might kick them in the chest! Owww! Finally, remember to keep the cats and dogs off your chest while you are healing, even if they have to be locked out of the bedroom or boarded out.
